The history of Borobudur temple

Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located in Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. 40 km from Yogyakarta takes 1 hour drive from Yogyakarta. The temple is in the form of a stupa (tomb, a place to store the ashes of nobles or certain figures). It was founded by followers of Mahayana Buddhism around 750-800 years. Estimated construction time is also based on a comparison between the types of characters written on the closed legs of Karmawibhangga Borobudur Temple with the common type of script used in the 8th and 9th century royal inscriptions. This basis then estimates that the Borobudur Temple was built during the dynastic kingdom Syailendra in Central Java which coincided between the period 760 to 830 AD. during the reign of the Syailendra wangsa. Borobudur is the largest temple or Buddhist temple in the world, as well as one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world which is included in the 7 wonders of the world

This monument consists of six square terraces above which there are three circular courtyards, on its walls decorated with 2,672 relief panels and the original there are 504 Buddha statues. Borobudur has the most complete collection of Buddhist reliefs in the world. The main stupa (tomb, where the ashes of nobles or certain figures) is located in the middle and crowns this building, surrounded by three circular rows of 72 hollow stupas in which there are buddha statues sitting cross-legged in perfect lotus position with mudras (hand gestures) Dharmachakra mudra (turning the dharma wheel).

This monument is a model of the universe and was built as a holy place to glorify the Buddha while functioning as a place of pilgrimage to guide humanity to move from the realm of worldly lust to enlightenment and wisdom according to the teachings of the Buddha.

Borobudur is now still used as a place of religious pilgrimage, every year Buddhists coming from all over Indonesia and abroad gather in Borobudur to commemorate Vesak Trisuci. In the world of tourism, Borobudur is a single tourist attraction in Indonesia which is the most visited by tourists.

The name of Borobudur

In Indonesian, ancient religious buildings are called temples, the term temple is also used more broadly to refer to all ancient buildings originating from the Hindu-Buddhist period in the archipelago, such as gates, gates and petirtaan (bathing pools and baths). The origin of the name Borobudur is not clear, although indeed the real names of most temples in Indonesia are unknown. The name Borobudur was first written in the book "History of Java" by Sir Thomas Raffles. Raffles wrote about a monument called Borobudur, but no older documents mention the exact same name. The only ancient Javanese text that gives clues to the existence of Buddhist holy buildings that might refer to Borobudur is Nagarakretagama, which was written by Mpu Prapanca in 1365.

The name Bore-Budur, which was later written by Borobudur, was probably written by Raffles in English grammar to refer to the village closest to the temple, Bore (Boro), most temples are often named after the village where the temple stands. Raffles also guessed that the term 'Budur' might be related to the term Buda in Javanese which means "ancient" - hence meaning "ancient Boro". However, other archaeologists assume that the name Budur comes from the term bhudhara which means mountain.

Rediscovery of Borobudur Temple

When the island of Java was under British control, the general governor Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814 received news of a large ancient building in the forest near the village of Bumisegoro. Raffles then sent HC Cornelius, Dutch engineer, to investigate. The results confirm the existence of the ancient building.

The Dutch East Indies official of Kedu, Hartmann, continued this in 1835. Thanks to this official work all parts of the temple building began to appear. This triggered the curiosity of world scientists. Various researches and excavation processes continue to be carried out, but not until it is settled. At a certain time, the Borobudur temple had become a loot victim. Many statues and other parts of this temple are sold and owned by other parties, even from other countries.

The process of restoration of the Borobudur temple took place due to various things. Until finally in 1973, the Indonesian government made a request to the international community for this historic heritage restoration. From 1975 to 1982, a major restoration process took place with the help of UNESCO. After the renovation was completely finished, Borobudur temple was included in the list of world heritage sites in 1991.

Two striking things that are immediately visible when visiting Borobudur temple; the number of reliefs (carvings of the walls) and the Stupa. In addition to the beautiful combination of these two things, it turns out that the meaning is also deeply contained.
The Borobudur building structure is built using a mandala style. Besides that it also symbolizes the concept of the universe in Buddhist belief. The temple is square, has 4 entrances, and the center of the temple is circular.

There are 3 zones in Borobudur temple;
